The building has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since February 16, 1995. Built in 1827 by slaves owned by George Shutter, an immigrant from Germany, who financed the school.  Mr. Shutter had no children but believed very strongly in education. During the Civil War, the school was used as a hospital and as a headquarters for both sides. His expedition through the physical mountain pass of Cumberland Gap helped ignite the fire of expansion to western territories beyond the borders of the Thirteen Colonies, first by the exploration and settlement of Kentucky. - [Daniel Boone Greenway Arboretum](https://www.townofcumberlandgap.com/daniel-boone-greenway-arboretum/): The Daniel Boone Arboretum is a certified Tennessee Arboretum located along a portion of the Daniel Boone Greenway, a 4-mile walking/biking trail that travels through Harrogate City Park, Lincoln Memorial University campus, an old railroad tunnel, the historic town of Cumberland Gap, and Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. Along the greenway, visitors can find over 60 different species of native trees that are appropriately labeled and learn about their habitats and uses.
